The spectacled bear, also known as the Andean bear, is a medium-to-large bear species native to the Andean region of South America. Males typically weigh between 130-200 kg and measure around 150-200 cm in length. Females are smaller, usually weighing between 35-82 kg and measuring about 120-150 cm in length. They are named for the distinctive white or light fur markings around their eyes, which can resemble spectacles. Their fur is generally black or dark brown, sometimes with lighter patches on the chest and neck.

The Spectacled Bear, also known as the Andean Bear, is found in the Andean regions of South America. Its range includes countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It inhabits a variety of forested and montane environments, including cloud forests, paramo grasslands, and lower montane forests, typically at elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters.

Comportamiento y reproducción

Spectacled Bears are primarily solitary animals, although they may occasionally be seen in pairs or small groups. They are mostly arboreal, spending a significant amount of time in trees. During the breeding season, males and females come together, and after a gestation period of about 8-9 months, females give birth to 1-2 cubs in a den, often in a hollow tree or rock crevice. Cubs stay with their mother for up to 2 years.
