Getting Around Georgetown & Coastal Areas

Taxis

For visitors navigating cities and coastal towns, taxis are the most convenient and recommended mode of transport. Official taxis are easily identifiable by their yellow body, though private hire cars are also common and can be readily booked through your hotel’s concierge.

Fares are not metered, so it is essential to agree on the price with the driver before your journey begins. To help set your expectations, a typical fare from Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) to central Georgetown is approximately $30 USD, while a short trip within the city should cost between $3-$5 USD.

The safest method for securing a ride is to have your hotel or restaurant call a trusted, known taxi service on your behalf. While ride-sharing apps like ‘iRide’ are available, their presence is not as widespread as traditional taxis, and you may find availability to be limited.

Minibuses

Minibuses are the primary means of transport for the local population and offer an inexpensive way to travel. They operate on designated, numbered routes. You can signal for one to stop anywhere along its path and simply inform the conductor, known locally as the ‘tout’, of your desired destination.

Be prepared for an intense cultural experience; these buses are often very crowded, play loud music, and are known for their high speeds. For this reason, we generally recommend them only for the more adventurous traveler or for short, uncomplicated routes during daylight hours.

Traveling to the Interior

4×4 Vehicles

Due to the rugged and unpaved nature of the trails leading into Guyana’s interior, a 4×4 vehicle is the only feasible option for land travel. You will not need to arrange this yourself; all necessary 4×4 transportation for your interior excursions is pre-arranged by us as part of your tour package.

The journey itself is an integral part of the adventure. Prepare for long, bumpy, and often dusty (or muddy, depending on the season) rides. The famous Georgetown-Lethem trail is a prime example of such a journey. Travel can be subject to delays from weather or trail conditions, and rest stops are typically basic, often consisting of small village shops. Patience and a sense of adventure are essential.

River & Water Travel

With over 1,000 miles of navigable rivers, boats are a fundamental part of Guyanese life and a primary mode of transport in the interior. You will access most remote jungle lodges and Amerindian communities via motorized canoes and speedboats.

Your safety is paramount. Life jackets will be provided for all river travel and their use is mandatory. Your guide will either operate the boat or you will be accompanied by a licensed ‘boat captain’. As with your land transport, all necessary boat travel is included and pre-arranged within your tour itinerary.

On a larger scale, public vehicle and passenger ferries serve as vital links across major rivers like the Essequibo and Demerara, connecting the coastal road networks.

Domestic Flights

Charter & Scheduled Light Aircraft

The fastest and most practical way to reach the deep interior, including the vast Rupununi Savannah and the magnificent Kaieteur Falls, is by air. Flying in a small aircraft, such as a Cessna, offers breathtaking aerial perspectives of the untouched rainforest canopy stretching to the horizon.

These flights operate from small, often unpaved airstrips that have been cleared from the jungle or savannah. We partner with reputable and long-standing domestic airlines, including Trans Guyana Airways and Air Services Limited, to ensure your safety and reliability.

Luggage & Logistics

• CRITICAL: Strict Luggage Limits: Domestic flights have very strict weight restrictions. You are typically limited to 20-25 lbs (9-11 kg) per person in total. This allowance includes both your main bag and your hand luggage.
• Bag Type: Soft-sided bags, such as duffels, are strongly preferred over hard-shell suitcases. They are far easier to stow in the small, irregular-shaped cargo holds of the aircraft.
• Storage: We can arrange for your larger international luggage to be securely stored at your hotel in Georgetown while you embark on your interior adventures.

Pre-Booking is Essential

Please be assured that all your transportation to, from, and within the interior has been carefully scheduled and booked in advance as part of your comprehensive itinerary. Attempting to arrange independent, spontaneous travel in the interior is extremely difficult and is not recommended.

Embrace “Guyana Time”

Travel schedules, particularly for domestic flights and long road journeys, can be influenced by local conditions such as heavy rain or logistical challenges. Delays are a normal and accepted part of travel in this remote part of the world. A flexible attitude and a good book will be your most valuable companions.

Road Safety

• When in Georgetown, we advise against traveling late at night. For any evening travel, always use a taxi that has been called for you by your hotel or another trusted source.
• We strongly advise visitors not to self-drive in Guyana. Unfamiliar road conditions, local driving styles, and a general lack of signage make it a challenging and potentially hazardous undertaking for those unaccustomed to the environment.
