Scarlet Macaw

The Scarlet Macaw is a brilliant and iconic parrot species found in the forests of Colombia. It has vibrant red, blue, and yellow feathers, a large beak, and a long tail. It is known for its intelligence, sociability, and loud, raucous calls. Spectacular, huge, and long-tailed parrot, wiped out from most areas by capture for the pet trade; attempts at reintroduction are taking place in some protected areas. Found very locally in lowland rainforest and adjacent semiopen areas with big trees; usually in pairs. Unmistakable, bright scarlet red overall with big yellow wing patches and mostly blue wings and rump. Calls are deep, throaty roars that carry long distances.

Habitats & Distribution

The Scarlet Macaw is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Its range extends from southern Mexico through Central America and into the Amazon Basin of Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. They inhabit lowland rainforests, as well as adjacent areas of secondary forest and savanna.

Behaviours & Reproduction

Scarlet Macaws are social and often seen in large, noisy flocks. They are known for their strong pair bonds and elaborate courtship displays. Breeding occurs in tree cavities or large nests built high in the canopy. Both parents are involved in incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks, which fledge after about 3 months.
